Introducing the National Fertiliser Database

Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulations Act 2023 has ushered in a new era for fertiliser management in Ireland. As of 11 July 2023, this legislation has paved the way for the creation of the National Fertiliser Database.

Purpose of the National Fertiliser Database:

• Monitoring and recording fertiliser sales throughout the supply chain.
• Ensuring greater adherence to water quality and environmental goals.
• Assisting Ireland in fulfilling its obligations under the 5th Nitrates Action Programme to the European Commission.
• Streamlining farmers’ fertiliser usage reports for both regulatory schemes and voluntary initiatives.
• The NFD aims to promote efficient nutrient usage on farms, aligning with Ireland’s Climate Action Plan’s objectives to reduce fertiliser consumption. Furthermore, the database will enhance traceability within the fertiliser supply chain, providing valuable data for future policy formulation concerning chemical fertilisers and national targets.

Key Dates to Remember:

24 July: Commencement of Part 3 of the 2023 Act. Registration begins for both Professional Fertiliser End Users and Fertiliser Economic Operators.

1 September: Mandatory data submission begins. Legal obligations concerning fertiliser purchase/sale/import are activated.

14 September: Deadline for Professional Fertiliser End Users to declare closing stocks.

30 September: Deadline for Fertiliser Economic Operators to declare closing stocks.

15 October: Final date for all users to submit closing stock data to the NFD.

15 December: Fertiliser Economic Operators to submit sales data for September to November 2023.

15 January 2024: Submission deadline for December 2023 sales data. Subsequent monthly data due by the 15th of the following month.
